Work on two nuclear power plants capable of producing cumulative energy of 2200MW is in progress at Karachi.
The two power plants are expected to be functional and start the production of electricity by the end of 2018.
The $9 billion project
Radio Pakistan revealed that the two power plants cost $9 billion and are being completed under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) projects.
The project is expected to set a network of rail, road and pipelines that will result in connecting China’s Xinjiang region with Gwadar.
Other projects
Other projects under the CPEC banner in Karachi as well as other parts of Sindh include:
- A project at Port Qasim Karachi, aiming to set up a 1320 MW coal-based power plant there.
- A power project in the Thar coal field aiming to set up a 1320 MW coal-based project is also under progress.
The K-2 and K-3 nuclear power plantsÂ
According to an official handout, earlier in March, Pakistan received a positive response by the International Atomic Energy Agency to its request.
The IAEA, granted Pakistan the permission to set up safeguards for K-2 and K-3 nuclear power plant units.
The Foreign Office said that these power plants would help meet Pakistan’s requirement for energy occurring due to rapid energy consumption.
He said that they might also contribute to a more sustainable economic growth and a rapid industrial growth.

We need to avoid Coal power plants.. We are going to end up having same level of air quality as China.. all that pollution is going to cause alot of health issues and early deaths. I can’t stress on the importance of avoiding coal power plants.
Solar is best for now and for the next 3 decades. very modular and easily repairable and replaceable with minimum carbon footprint. clean energy. IN $9 Billion we can have 9000 MW more than coal and Nuclear combined
really a bad investment, not to mention easy terrorist target, nuclear meltdown and radiation leak. ALso $9 billion for 2400 MW only? India spend $2billion for 2000MW from Solar. if we spend same amount now to get 9,000 MW is better and clean energy and will send shock-waves across the world and get green peace approval rating all time high along with the 1 billion tree program.
