Najam Sethi Under Investigation Over Questionable Income During World Cup 2015

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) released a chiefly statistic statement regarding investigations into Rs. 900 billion worth of corruption.

Chairman Justice Javed Iqbal ordered for details into 499 inquiries, 287 investigations for 1,138 trial corruption reference cases.

While no mention of any particular individual or entity was made by NAB itself, trial references for Lahore, Karachi, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, Rawalpindi and Sukkur were enumerated. More can be learned about this here.

Local media reports, however, suggested that inquiries into the retrieval for the Rs 900 billion are inclusive of a investigating complaints against PCB Chairman Najam Aziz Sethi and former secretary to the Prime Minister, Fawad Hassan Fawad.

Sethi on the Hook

Najam Sethi’s questionable income includes making significant money when Pakistan lost a couple of matches in the world cup tournament of 2015:

  • $4 million when Pakistan lost to India
  • $0.6 million when Pakistan lost to West Indies

Regarding the monetary transparency of the PCB chairman, questions have arisen previously as well, upon his declaration that Rs 16 million worth of his assets were “gifts”.

The consideration of this previous brawl with the Federal Bureau of Revenue (FBR) puts Sethi in susceptible light. Case with the FBR for undeclared assets in 2010-2011 and a concealed approximate of Rs 19,000 million in tax returns for the same year are expected to be looked into.

Other accusations include reports by former cricketer Sarfraz Nawaz of Sethi’s possession of undeclared apartments in Manhattan, New York and another million dollar apartment in London for which the finances are rather imperceptible.

Allegations Against Fawad

The financial accountability of Fawad Hassan Fawad’s construction of a building worth Rs 12 billion opposite General Post Office (GPO) Rawalpindi is doubtful. It is said to have been provided for by JS Bank under the influence of Fawad and his brother Waqar.

It is also noted that while reports against both the PCB chairman and former secretary to the prime minister were submitted by Sarfraz Nawaz during the tenure of the previous chairman of NAB, the bureau abstained from participation in the matter.

Other Big Fish in the Pan

Justice Javed Iqbal has announced his intention to look into all inquiries and investigations relative to the retrieval of this Rs 900 billion, and has also commenced inquiries against

  • Lt General (retd) Javed Ashraf Qureshi
  • Cricketer Tariq Hameed
  • Former chairman PTA Farooq Ahmed Awan
  • Former secretary to the Ministry of Information Riaz Asher Siddique
  • Midas CEO Inam Akber
  • Officials from the Federal Urdu University

While the credibility of most these allegations remains yet to be made concrete, the NAB has directed regional offices into extracting tangible evidence relative to these cases.
