Minister for Power, Awais Ahmed Leghari, has said that a technology based system will be introduced to bring improvements in efficiency of power producing and distribution companies.
The government has been paying focus to power generation and remained successful, however, focus has now shifted to the distribution companies to improve performance, he said.
While talking to a private news channel, he said that the government had exposed overbilling of 4 to 8 billion rupees by power distributing companies during the last two months.
The government was about to start accountability at these distribution companies and non-performing companies would be shown the door, he added.
The minister said those consumers, who were already paying bills regularly, unfortunately had to pay for electricity loss through taxes. He said that special attention was being paid to customer services sector and that pending electricity meters will be released soon.
To a question, Awais Leghari said that power supply can not be increased in areas where power theft rate was high.
