Signs of trouble have been visible for months, but this week may finally bring the moment of truth. If the latest rumors are correct, OnePlus could be about to shut down its global operations, bringing a sudden end to one of Android’s most recognizable brands.
OnePlus originally started as an independent brand. However, over the last few years, Oppo’s influence over the company grew from an open secret among tech insiders to an obvious fact.
This transition toward the brand’s disappearance may be finalized later this week. According to a new report from a usually reliable source, Oppo and OnePlus are allegedly going to announce “fundamental changes” to their strategy in the next few days. This reportedly means OnePlus will completely disappear from key markets like Europe and the United States.
At the same time, Oppo plans to expand into new European markets, presumably to fill the empty space left by OnePlus’ withdrawal. However, it is unclear how Oppo plans to fill that void with its own devices, which are definitely more expensive than OnePlus handsets.
For current users, updates and support for existing OnePlus devices will continue until the end of their respective lifecycles. The remaining stock of OnePlus devices will be sold off over the coming weeks and months, with no further inventory expected and no new products in the pipeline for Europe and the US.
Meanwhile, in India and China, OnePlus may survive only as a basic sub-brand of Oppo and nothing more, focusing solely on low-priced smartphones and tablets.
