Former IGP Punjab’s Son and Accomplices Beat Official at Islamabad Airport [Updated]

Son of a former IGP of Punjab and his two accomplices brutally tortured a foreign office official at the Benazir Bhutto International Airport’s Lounge on Sunday morning. The assault happened after the victim objected to the IGP’s son smoking in the vicinity of a no-smoking zone.

The official from Foreign Office, Adeel Khan, who is currently posted at the Canadian Embassy Pakistan, was waiting for his luggage inside the Islamabad Airport Lounge along with other passengers after reaching home through Turkish Airlines flight TK-710. During this time he and some other passengers noticed a man smoking in a no-smoking zone.

Adeel Khan told the police that when he approached the man and asked him not to smoke as he was causing inconvenience to the other passengers, the man, who later identified himself as Mohsin Khattak, son of former IGP Punjab Usman Khattak, subjected Adeel Khan to brutal torture, after first blowing smoke through Adeel’s face.

In a written complaint to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and later to Islamabad Police, Adeel Khan said the accused Mohsin Khattak and his two accomplices subjected him to violence, tore apart his clothes and humiliated him just because he had asked him not to smoke in a no-smoking area. The accomplices, Adeel alleged belonged to the special branch of the Police. They assisted Mohsin during his assault, Adeel mentions in his letter to the authorities as well.

In his complaint, he alleged that CAA and Airport Security Force (ASF) staff was just observing the event from a nearby distance and no one intervened. After the assault, the accused walked away from the lounge easily and no ASF personnel took any action.

Adeel lodged a complaint at the police station after the incident, naming Mohsin and other unidentified accomplices for physically assaulting him.

Several other passengers also lodged written complaints against the accused for indulging in violence, hooliganism and highhandedness at the airport.

Interior Minister has taken notice of this incident. He directed Islamabad Police to conduct a detailed inquiry into the matter and submit a report to him within the next 48 hours.

Mohsin Retracts Allegations

Once news of this incident spread, Mohsin denied the allegations against him.

Mohsin’s father Usman Khattak went on record with his version of events. He says that even though it was wrong of his son to smoke in the airport, he alleges that it was Adeel who got physical with Mohsin and fractured his hand. Usman states that it was Adeel who started the fight instead of calling the police officials. As per the former IGP, he was sitting in the car park when the incident took place.

He also mentioned that no special treatment or protocol was accorded to his son. Rather, he asked two officials to go and ‘assist’ his son with his luggage.
