Mr. Alam commended StormFiber’s efforts to empower the people of Pakistan with its internet services. CEO Cybernet, Mr. Danish A. Lakhani, shared his insights on the unreasonably high regulatory duties that have been levied on the import of fiber optic cables in Pakistan.
He observed that the 20% additional RD introduced in late 2017 is on top of existing 20% customs duty, 17% sales tax, 3% Advance Tax and 5.5% income tax. The net impact on the import of fiber optic cable, given that this is an extremely heavy item and costly to transport, is well over 100%.
Mr. Lakhani further stated that high duties will make many broadband projects in KPK and other provinces simply unviable. He advised the provincial government to work with the Federal Government to reduce these oppressive duties – and instead of short term revenue gains, come up with a long-term vision to increase fiber based broadband penetration across Pakistan which stands at an abysmally low 0.11%.
He appreciated how StormFiber has been welcomed in KP and assured the company’s support and cooperation with the government at all levels for the development of the IT sector in KP.
