PM Shahid Abbasi Told to Remove His Coat & Belt at New York Airport

The latest incident involving Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi has filled people with rage. The Prime Minister, who is the highest office holder in Pakistan after the President, and the most powerful man in Pakistan’s democratic system, was put through a security check at New York’s John F Kennedy Airport.

According to reports, the PM was on a private visit to his ailing sister in the United States. He also met Vice-President Mike Pence on his visit as well. During his talks with the American VP, Prime Minister Abbasi was asked to ‘do more’ in the fight against terrorism. However, this is not the reason why Pakistanis are so angry right now.

The Security Check

PM Abbasi may have been on a private visit to the USA. However, the ‘rigorous’ security checks that he went through with at the JFK Airport in New York, have made people angry. The Pakistani PM was reportedly asked to remove his belt, shoes and coat in the name of security.

Some people have termed this incident as an “embarrassment,” one that does not befit a leader of a sovereign country. Many talk show hosts and anchors on Pakistani TV channels wondered why he didn’t go with his diplomatic passport and avoided this issue altogether. Some are saying that the PM shouldn’t have gone on a “private visit” and that this incident has humiliated the sentiments of 200 million Pakistanis.

In the following video, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi is shown after undergoing the security checks at the airport. Take a look at what happened and how the media reacted to it:

After the procedure, PM Abbasi can be seen picking up his bag and coat and walking out like any ordinary passenger.

The relations between USA and Pakistan are at an all-time low. There are reports that the Trump administration is considering freezing military aid altogether. The US recently banned seven Pakistani companies for ‘nuclear trade’ as well.

    • what is your auqaat. Atleast he is better than you.He carries respect which i think you dont.

    • He was not on official visit, he was not carrying a diplomatic passport so “oqaat” question does not arise here.

      • He is PM of PK, what the F*K is unofficial? everything is official about him. if you “slightly” read the world media, they all are bashing the situation and called it “embarrassing”, just google it, but if you have same etiquette like Abbasi, so forget it, and sleep like a whore.

    • Masha Allah,
PM ki auqat ye hy apky khiyal mein, tu natives ki auqat kia hy?
      Aap Pakistani tu nahi lagty.

  • teri apna kia aukaat hai, kutti ke tarhan tumko roozana treat kartay hain american police and security forces in america, altleast humain to humari police tak nahin pochti.

    • Youtube link of a video uploaded by an Indian ?

Writer seems to be die hard fan of Orya Maqbool Jan and Sami Ibrahim, not surprised if writer is turning his inspirations from these two “jhurloo” journalists into writing.

Orya Maqbool used Islamic “cover” to invade in journalism as “authentic” journalist just like Shahid Masood who started with Dajal’s stories and then his own stories. Samih Ibrahim, do you think he is a journalist ? His programs are having one agenda only. I wonder who watch them at the first place as they are never neutral and their programs are completely one sided.

Both journalists are famous for their one point agenda programs i.e. propaganda on PMLN, Nawaz and his family.

  • Most of the Pakistanis are checked thoroughly uptp under garments only by US even before reaching there. That’s the worth of being a poor nation.

    • You are completely wrong my dear. Please do not make such statements if you have never been to US.

Immigration officials may ask you tough questions but on security you are treated like anybody else, they do not look at your passport.

JFK is the worst airport for security but even then they do not ask you to make a separate line or treat you differently only because you are Pakistani.

        • Nothing happened to him. Stupid Indian media is trying to embarrass Pakistan and many stupid journalists from Pakistan are doing the same for political reasons.
PM Abbasi i think behaved in a manner that is commendable. Most would have used a dipomatic PP for a private visit also. Had he done that, he would still be criticized!

  • I thought Every One has to go with same process at US Airports. Or am i mistaken? Why this is considered any different?

    • You are right. Only immigration officials ask you questions, security officials check all with the same protocol without looking at your passport.

Those who say Pakistanis are checked up to their boxers have never been there.

  • Why the fuck is this an issue? Its a private visit and he should be treated just like another person and not get any VIP status.

    • Dont you know about Shahrukh Khan issue and how indian govt reacted? Does SK hold a diplomatic passport?

      • Abbasi wasn’t holding a diplomatic passport.

Do not forget these prominent Indians were holding diplomatic passports:

2002 George Fernandes Indian Minister of Defence Washington Dulles (Searched)

2003 George Fernandes Minister of Defence Washington Dulles

September 2010 Praful Patel Minister of Civil Aviation Chicago O’Hare (Detention)

December 2010 Meera Shankar Ambassador to the US Jackson–Evers (Searched)

December 2010 Hardeep Puri Permanent Representative to the UN Houston airport Detention

September 2011 A. P. J. Abdul Kalam Former President of India New York JFK Search

      • we do not compare our PM with any actor. He is not better than any ordinary citizen of my country.

  • He was on private visit, and its more fine that he was not carrying his diplomat passport, thats a sign of healthy personality.
We should improve our level as a nation and stop blaming others.

  • This article is making an issue out of nothing. It’s commendable that the PM did not use his diplomatic status to bypass security when on a personal visit. Clearly the officials at JFK would have no idea that he’s the PM. Instead of praising the PM, we are taking this as an insult. Let’s focus on the right priorities please.

    • agreed.
Abbassi is a PM who is probably the best among all in his class,
He has set many good examples.

  • yeah it happens when the party own many crime ministers. might have been doubted for money laundering so he had to remove his coat.

  • The US is the enemy of Islam and Pakistan. It’s time we cut relations with this thug and form solid bonds with the Muslim nations – KSA, UAE, Egypt, Malaysia, etc.

    • KSA and other Muslim nations don’t love Pakistan either. Try to be realistic!

      • Do you love and respect your own country? What is your identity? what passport you are using? How many countries you have visited? Is there any country in the world most blessed comparing to Pakistan?

    • you look like a sick minded person,,ugly human.
I hope now you must have learnt a lesson. You are nobody to insult a PM who comes from one of the top countries.

  • In USA, if you are not holding a diplomatic PP, you are treated like any other traveler and have to go through the security check that PM Abbasi went through. This involves removing one’s coat, shoes, belt, emptying contents of the wallet, removing cell phone and putting all these on a tray that goes through the scanner. This is normal. There is no VIP culture in USA.
So what happened to PM Abbasi is normal.
I commend him for going without a diplomatic PP for a private visit. Most people have critcized him but i think what he did was commendable. While most other high ranking officials would have used a diplomatic pp for a private visit, PM Abbasi did not. This should be highlighted and commended.

  • If our Priime Ministers and Ministers are involved in financial frauds with public money, they should be stripped naked, and physically checked.

    • what a nation we are !!! for any good or bad reasoning we repeat our ugly songs, You are not going to condemn sick behavior of other nations but have started to show your mother in law picture. A mafia in Pakistan is working to portray politics and politicians as the worst natives. We understand the facts and under no circumstance any attempt to derail democracy will be accepted.

  • A country is only allowed 1 state visit (i.e. travel on a diplomatic passport) during a US President’s 4-year term in office. Accordingly, Abbasi was sensible in using his private passport for what was clearly a private visit. A lot of the sensationalisim of this non-event has been in the Indian media. It is disappointing to see Pakistani outlets run with it. The presenter on the video clip above is being disingenuous in contrasting Abbasi’s visit with Ayub Khan’s visit – that was a state visit (evidenced by the fact that Ayub Khan was received by the US President.). Nowhere does that significant difference appear in the video clip, which seems designed to offend the sensibilities of its viewers. That’s hardly honest journalism.

  • this is strange to see the comments: what it has to if american has asked an ordinary Pakistani Man for the screening process.
Hell to those who are commenting, if he was being investigated or screened in the capacity of PM Pakistan then it should be unlawful. But he went to america within his own as pakistani citizen whats wrong if their security ask him.
this has to be done with the any deligate to any country in Pakistan as well.
