The Central Development Working Party (CDWP) has approved a project for “Strengthening of Core Network & Expansion of PERN footprints” throughout the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) Optical fiber for Rs 1.998 billion.
The project will ensure that new universities, campuses, sub-campuses, and colleges will be powered by a strong ICT infrastructure, and supported by PERN’s ultra-high speed backbone network.
Under the Vision 2025 initiative, the federal government plans to roll out an integrated three-tiered model of tertiary education. This plan also includes affiliated colleges which are currently providing education at the students’ doorsteps.

The CDWP met with Deputy Chairman Planning Commission Sartaj Aziz in the chair here on Thursday to approve the project.
About PERN 3 Project
PERN 3 is the name of the ultra-high speed backbone network that will be providing 40Gbps to 100Gbps of backbone connectivity by interlinking 50+ cities across the country and territorial network partners (HED’s).
This powerful digital infrastructure will connect the country with the data, tools and classrooms that drive innovation in today’s digital economy.
More than 50,000 researchers at nearly 300 Pakistani universities will be able to use this network, as well as people from research institutes, hospitals and government laboratories throughout the country.
This network will also support supercomputers for research and educational purposes in Pakistan. In this regard, R&D efforts, especially in the areas of Fluid Dynamics and Biosciences, huge data processing applications such as Flood and Weather Forecasting, Financial Analysis, Oil and Gas Exploration, Energy Efficient Building & Transport Management will be made possible at the national level.

They should aim for 1tbps but I guess we’ll get their eventually with better technology on the same cables.
