MSI’s “Budget” Gaming Laptop Lineup Receives Major Performance Bump

MSI has updated its gaming laptop lineup with Intel’s new hexa-core Core i7 processor. The machines, which also come with Nvidia graphics, start at $929, which is not bad for some impressive gaming on the go.

Design

The lineup, consisting of the MSI GF, GL, GP, GV and come with either 15.6 or 17.3″ 1080p IPS displays on the front, with optional 130Hz/3ms delay panels. There are no 4K or touch options, though.

The design is nothing to write home about, though, there is back-lighting on the keyboard, with more expensive options supporting RGB lighting.

The machines tip the scale at 2.2kg for 15-inch versions or 2.7kg for 17-inch versions. You won’t see too many professionals carrying one of these machines around.

Hardware

Under the hood, you get the six-core Core i7-8750H processor, with up to 32 GB DDR4-2400 memory. An M.2 and a 2.5-inch bay will provide the necessary storage options.

As for the graphics, the options start from a 2 GB GTX 1050 card on the cheaper GL and GV, to an 8 GB GTX 1070 on the GP.

Connectivity options include a USB 2.0, 3.0, and optional 3.1 Type-C and Type-A ports on select models. There’s also an SD card reader, HD webcam, and Ethernet. Wireless options include Bluetooth 5.0 and Wi-Fi ac.

Price and Availability

Pricing starts at $929 for the cheapest GL model (2 GB GTX 1050) to $1299 for the GP (4 GB GTX 1050 Ti). Expect the price to rise very quickly as you start to add various options on top of this. The machines are already available in select markets as of now.
