PCB Issues Ultimatum To Nasir Jamshed Over Spot-Fixing Allegations

The shamed former Test opener Nasir Jamshed is facing a prospect of a ban for his alleged role in Pakistan Super League (PSL) spot-fixing scandal if he does not respond to the charge sheet filed against him by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

Following a detailed investigation, a charge sheet was filed against Nasir last week. PCB’s anti-corruption tribunal claimed that there are six allegations against Nasir, who is currently residing in the United Kingdom.

Nasir has been given a deadline of 18th May to respond. In case he does not respond, the tribunal reserves the right to announce a verdict within 40 days.

The tribunal, which is headed by Justice (Rtd.) Fazal Mian Chohan, is a newly established unit of PCB. It held a hearing last week where PCB filed the charge sheet.

According to the tribunal’s rules and regulations, only senior lawyers are supposed to handle cases such as Nasir’s. However, to represent the former Pakistani cricketer, two junior lawyers turned up who were not allowed to proceed by the judge after they failed to produce the power of attorney.

The other members on the tribunal include former Test pacer Aaqib Javed and advocate Shahzaib Masood.

PCB lawyer, Tafazzul Rizvi, said:

I don’t know if Nasir will come down to Lahore to attend the hearing or his lawyers will represent him. But if he fails to send in his reply the tribunal can reach a verdict in absentia in 40 days.

Although Nasir Jamshed has termed the charges against him as ‘flimsy’ and ‘ridiculous’, he is also being investigated by the UK National Crime Agency after PSL and the agency has withheld his passport.
