Notepad is Finally Getting an Update on Windows 10

Microsoft’s iconic “Notepad” app is getting its first actual update in years. The new notepad will appear in the update codenamed “Redstone 5” and is expected to roll out later this year.

Notepad won’t be getting any major design and feature overhaul; instead, the app is going to add a few little tweaks here and there to enhance user experience, for those who use notepad for development, logs, or simply writing down any sort of text on their PCs.

Features Included In the New Update

  • Improvements in Wrap-around find/replace.
  • It will now be able to remember previously entered values and the state of checkboxes and automatically populate them the next time you open the find dialog.
  • After selecting text, when you’ll open the find dialog, the search field would automatically fetch the selected text.
  • You can zoom into the text by holding down the ctrl key and using the mouse wheel to zoom in and out.

  • The status bar will display line and column numbers when word-wrap is enabled.
  • Added extended line ending support so that Unix/Linux line endings (LF) and Macintosh line endings (CR) are supported in Notepad.
  • Ctrl + backspace support to delete the previous words.
  • Performance improvements while opening large files.
  • Search for words on Bing through Notepad by simply right clicking on them to get a new option.
  • When saving a file in Notepad, the line and column number no longer reset to 1.
  • Notepad now correctly displays lines that don’t fit entirely on the screen.
  • Arrow keys now correctly un-select text first and then move the cursor.

Redstone 5

Redstone 5 has a lot of other improvements to a host of apps in build 17713, including Remote Desktop with biometric support, Web Login for Windows 10, and Microsoft Edge improvements. Microsoft is now putting the finishing touches on the next major Windows 10 update, but it won’t include the popular “Sets” feature for File Explorer and other apps.

While Windows 10 Build 17713 is not available to the public yet, Insiders who are subscribed to receive the “Fast Ring” of updates can download it right now.
