Teenager Killed as a Ride at Karachi’s Biggest Amusement Park Fails 1 Month After Launch

A 16-year-old girl was killed in the newly-opened Askari Amusement Park in Karachi, as a swing ride fell apart on Sunday evening. As many as 15 people were reportedly injured in the tragic incident.

Scores of ambulances reached the spot to take the injured to nearby hospitals. According to eyewitness accounts, kids and adults were stranded underneath the collapsed ride.

Inspector General (IG) Sindh Amjad Javed Saleemi took notice of the incident and ordered the Senior Superintendent Police East (SSP East) to ensure rescue services at the earliest.

Karachi’s newest recreational spot was inaugurated on Eid-ul-Fitr, just a month ago.

A Tragic Loss

The teenager Kashaf Samad, who lived in Sharafabad, was taken to Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi. However, she was already dead before reaching the hospital, the authorities confirmed. Another injured person, Ibrahim Yasin was also taken to the same hospital.

Liaquat National Hospital admitted 7 injured in the emergency ward while 7 other teenagers (aged between 12-15) were taken to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for treatment.

All the amusement parks in the province have been shut down for 3 days following the Sindh’s Chief Secretary Major (R) Azam Suleman Khan’s directives. The technical inspection of all the parks will be carried out to ensure no further accidents take place. He has also established a team under the supervision of Deputy Commissioner East to submit a report on the matter in a day.

The injured will be provided with medical treatment by the Sindh government as directed by Caretaker Chief Minister Fazlur Rehman.
