Here’s How Daily Commutes Affect Your Health and Well-Being

Most of us accept that our commuting habits are just an unavoidable yet mundane part of our lives. We wake up, get ready for school or workplace, and then go on our merry way, without considering how significantly this routine ends up affecting us throughout the day.

Turns out that our daily commuting routine has far-reaching implications for our health and well-being.  Just recently, researchers have studied the implications that arise from our use of transports to go from one place to another.

During our daily commute, we often face encounters, minor or major, which impact us in subtle ways, changing us actively instead of being a mere experience. These experiences become a part of us, we become what we are now and we might not even notice their impact, but gradually the transit life changes us for good.

A study indicates that an average British worker travels 308,607 kilometres, equivalent to 1 year 35 days in his/her lifetime. Another study reveals that the same worker spends 19 working days commuting 139 kilometres per year.

Experiences during commute are much more than just good or bad. The author of the study reveals that he interviewed several people regarding what they do during their commute. Some of the commuters responded that they liked their way to work, read novels along the way, made a community of friends around them. Others stated that they cycled to work and enjoyed every bit of it, while some hated the constant travel and wastage of time which could’ve otherwise been spent with family or friends.

Commuting can be tiresome sometimes, even costly and spiteful, but if done correctly, it can also be energizing, exciting and enlightening in some cases as well.

A bad encounter during commute might not be bearable for us, but repeated unpleasant experiences (such as a commute) may end up changing our views. They can change how we think and how we confront a situation. A long way to work might be bearable in the start, but constant lengthy commutes change us from within fundamentally.

To conclude, we tend to rethink our desires, re-evaluate our relationships, and ponder on our values when we commute.
