Supreme Court Declares PIA CEO’s Appointment Illegal

The Supreme Court of Pakistan has ruled that the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Musharraf Rasool Cyan, was appointed illegally and that he did not meet the criteria for holding the office.

Hearing the case, a 3-member panel headed by the Chief Justice of Pakistan, Mian Saqib Nisar, including Justice Ahsan and Justice Ejaz-ul-Hassan, nullified Cyan’s appointment in the ruling on Monday.

The judges were hearing the case regarding PIA’s privatization when Justice Ejaz pointed out the illegal appointment for the head of national carrier.

As per the initial report, PIA CEO Cyan’s appointment was not according to law and we are looking into it.

However, PIA’s counsel, Naeem Bukhari, argued that the Islamabad High Court has already issued its verdict and it is present before the Cabinet. The CJP took back the decision, asking Bukhari to present his arguments pertaining to Cyan’s appointment.

Justice Ahsan observed that the CEO’s appointment was a ‘violation of the guidelines’.

Cyan does not meet the requirements to be CEO and thus his appointment is illegal.

The appointment has been in question for quite some time now and it remains to be seen as how the CJP punishes the people involved in the matter.
