Back in July, a team of Pakistan Army rescued a Russian mountaineer, Alexander Gukov, stranded on the Latok 1 mountain peak of the Karakoram Range.
For Pakistan Army soldiers who rescued the Russian mountaineer, the Russian President Vladimir Putin has awarded the ‘Order of Friendship’ to the four rescuers.
A statement published in the Russian Gazette, the official government newspaper, is as follows:
Kazi Muhammad, Abid Rafik, Muhammad Anzhum Rafik and Fakhar-i-Abbas have become Knights of the Order of Friendship, for their participation in the operation to save the Russian climber.

Stranded at about 20,650 feet on Latok I peak in the Biafo glacier region for six days, Alexander was saved by the Army after an intense helicopter mission and had been shifted to Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Skardu for medical attention. Three days prior to his recuse, he had exhausted his food supplies and due to the bad weather, it made the helicopter rescue almost impossible.
“The unprecedented rescue mission was undertaken by Pakistan army aviation helicopters under extreme weather conditions making it the first ever rescue from such a height in Pakistan,” read a press release from the army’s media wing.
Alexander went up to the peak alongside his partner Sergey Glazunov who unfortunately fell to his death.
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), General Qamar Javed Bajwa, personally went to visit the mountaineer in CMH Rawalpindi.
In a video message, the mountaineer also thanked the Pakistan Army and applauded the hospitality and bravery of the nation.
This is just one of the rescues of the brave Pakistan Army.
