OGRA Notifies Up to 143pc Hike in Gas Tariff for High-End Users

The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (ORGA) has issued a notification imposing an increase in gas tariff for different consumers.

As per the notification, the gas tariff for the domestic consumers has gone up by 10 percent to 143 percent.

Gas tariff for consumers using up to 50 cubic meter gas has gone up by 10 percent while tariff for consumers using up to 100 cubic meters has been increased by 15 percent.

The categorization of consumers has been changed from three to seven thus introducing as many slabs for determination of tariff.

According to the new tariff, users who consume up to 50 cubic meters of gas per month will fall in the first slab and will experience a nearly 10 percent increase in prices.

The second slab will comprise users who consume up to 100 cubic metres of gas per month and will witness an increase of 15 percent in gas prices. Those consuming up to 200 cubic metres of gas will fall in the third slab and will experience a 20 percent increase in their gas bills.

The price hike for the upper class, comprising consumers who use up to 300 cubic metres of gas per month, will be 25 percent, while those who use up to 400 cubic metres of gas per month will have to bear a 30 percent increase in gas prices.

Those consuming over 400 cubic metres of gas per month will face a 143 percent increase in gas charges.

The regulatory authority notified 40 percent increase, from Rs700/mmbtu to Rs980/mmbtu, for Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) consumers in Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Likewise, the tariff for fertilizer plants that use gas as a fuel has also been raised by 40 percent. It is estimated after the increase in gas prices, the price of per bag of urea fertilizer will go up by Rs 128.

The body also notified a 57 percent increase in gas prices for the commercial sector, a 40 percent increase for general industry, a 57 percent hike for the power sector, and a 30 percent increase for the cement sector.
