Transport fares in Rawalpindi have been reduced by 12% to 18% following a decrease in petroleum prices, on the directions of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif.
The district administration and the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) have issued revised fare lists with immediate effect.
According to the RTA secretary, the new fares were recalculated at the tehsil level to ensure that the benefit of lower fuel prices is passed on to the public.
Under the revised rates, fares for AC diesel transport have been reduced by 12%. Fares for non-AC diesel and petrol-run public transport have been cut by 15%, while goods transport fares have been reduced by 18%.
Officials said a strict monitoring mechanism has been put in place to ensure the new fares are implemented. Special teams are conducting checks at bus stands, wagon terminals, and different transport routes.
During the ongoing campaign, officials inspected 464 vehicles. Of these, 86 vehicles were fined, with total penalties reaching Rs. 280,000 for violations.
The administration warned that overcharging would lead to strict legal action, including fines and possible vehicle impounding. Officials said daily inspections would continue to ensure compliance and provide relief to commuters.
