Opposition Calls for Islamabad International Airport to be Renamed After Benazir Bhutto

In the Public Accounts Committee meeting which was held today, various matters were discussed among which was the name of the new Islamabad International Airport.

As per details, the meeting was held with the opposition leader, Shehbaz Sharif, in the chair.

It turns out that the PAC records of the new airport show its name as “New Benazir Bhutto International Airport”. According to Senator Sherry Rehman, members of all political parties present in the meeting agreed that the right name of the airport should be NBBI.

In fact, she posted a tweet and advised the government to consider the suggestion.

Notably, the new airport was inaugurated in May last year and years of waiting. With the initiation of the project, the argument over the airport’s name started between the then PML-N government and the opposition Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP).

PM Rejects All Options for Naming the New Islamabad Airport

The PPP parliamentarians severely criticized the government for calling the site of the new airport as ‘new Islamabad International Airport’ instead of naming it after Benazir Bhutto.

In September 2018, a resolution also made its way to the Senate to this effect.

It needs to be mentioned here that the then prime minister Nawaz Sharif had announced a four-member committee to propose names for the new airport.

The committee suggested naming the airport after someone from Pakistan Movement so that it does not change later because of politics.

However, in the last cabinet meeting of PML-N government, PM Shahid Khaqan did not finalize the name and left the issue open for debate.
