Traders Agree to Use Biodegradable Shopping Bags After a 72-Hour Protest

The business community in Kohat has agreed to use biodegradable shopping bags after a 72-hour-long strike that ended after talks with the deputy commissioner.

The traders went on strike after the DC announced a ban on plastic shopping bags three days earlier while imposing section 144 on their manufacture, use, and sale.

Secretary-General of Tajir action committee, Abid Khan, told media that they have formed legal and political committees to raise the issue with the government and in the court after the imposition of the ban. He told that they tried to contact DC and DIG several times, but they did not respond.

However, the DC called them to their office. After the meeting, the DC told the traders’ leaders that the chief minister had imposed the ban and he is just implementing it.

DC further said that section 144 has been enforced all over the province while warning that anybody making or selling plastic bags will be fined heavily.

After meeting with the DC, the traders’ committee has decided to destroy the plastic bags and sell only government-stamped bags.
