According to the World Crime Index for 2019 (Current), Karachi has moved down in this year’s rankings, reaching the 77th position, as of April 23 2019. The cities with the top spots are the ones with the most crimes, which means that Karachi has improved its control over criminal activities during 2019.
The periodically updated Numbeo World Crime Index lists Karachi at 61st while the daily updated index currently lists Karachi at 77th which means that Karachi’s situation is improving with each passing day.
In the current crime index 2019, Islamabad ranks 247th with a crime index of 33.83. Lahore stands at 187th position with a crime index of 41.38.
As for the rest of the world, Abu Dhabi is the safest city in the world with 348th position and a crime index of 10.15. The worst city with regards to the crime index is Caracas, Venezuela with 1st position and a crime index of 83.47. UK’s Birmingham city ranks 14th with an index of 75.86.
The US’ Detroit and Baltimore cities are also among the worst in crime control with ranks of 21 and 22 respectively. The crime index of these cities is 71.50 and 71.08 respectively.
In 2018, the metropolitan was ranked as 68th on the index. It is worth mentioning here that the city was amongst the worst cities on the crime index just over four years ago.
With the feverish efforts of the law enforcement agencies (LEA), the city’s ranking surged from 6th in 2014 to 70th in 2019. Only a few years ago, the city of lights was known for all the bad things. It was riddled with target killings, muggings, shootings, violence, and unrest since the early 1990s.
For over two decades, the city lost 2000-2500 lives to violence every year. However, Karachi’s situation took a dramatic turn after the paramilitary Rangers were granted special policing powers.

In 2014, the city stood at 6th position on the World Crime Index. As much as 1,888 people were killed that year, including 117 officials of LEAs. In only four years—2018—the city ranked 68 on the index.
It has improved further to 77th position with the crime index of 57.05 in the first four months.
In 2018, killings amounted to 395 people, including 10 policemen. In the first four months of 2019, people killed amount to 153 including seven policemen.
