Fawad Chaudhry Forms Moonsighting Committee to Prepare a 5-Year Hijri Calendar

Following his statement regarding moonsighting and the role of religious clerics, Fawad Chaudhry has given an official go-ahead for the constitution of a 5-member committee to prepare the Hijri calendar for the next five years.

The decision comes in the wake of Federal Minister of Science and Technology’s statement, where he was heard saying “that there’s no point spending 4 million on moonsighting”.

Joint Scientific Advisor MoST, Dr. Muhammad Tariq Masood will perform the duties of committee convener. The other members of the committee include:

  • Waqar Ahmed – Lecturer Meteorology Department, Comsats University Islamabad
  • Nadeem Faisal – Deputy Director, PMD
  • Abu Nasan – Deputy Director, PMD
  • Ghulam Murtaza – DCM SUPARCO, Islamabad

The committee’s responsibility will be to draft a Hijri calendar with 100% accuracy to avoid the controversy surrounding moon sightings for Ramazan, Eid-ul-Fitr, and Moharram for the next five years.
