Sony Suddenly Unveils the Compact Xperia Ace in Japan

Nowadays, smartphone manufacturers focus on large displays with cinematic abilities. Sony is always keen on the traditional design having stuck with large bezels at the top and bottom. However, we saw that changing with Sony’s recent Xperia 1.

Just as we were about to establish the fact that Sony is going to stray from its original design path, the company surprised us with the release of its compact smartphone Xperia Ace.

The new model has been launched in Japan and is exclusive to the local telecom carrier Docomo. Previously, there were rumors about Sony launching its compact smartphone under the moniker Xperia XZ4.

Unfortunately, we did not get to see the anticipated compact phone. Analysts say this Xperia Ace might be the phone we never saw however the midrange specs beg to differ from that speculation.

Design and Display

Xperia ace follows the old Sony Xperia design path. We have a sharp rectangular shape with huge top and bottom bezels. At the back, there is only a single sensor snapper and an Xperia logo.

The phone has a metallic finish. It comes in black, white and purple colors.

Display wise, the phone features a 5 inches full HD+ screen with 18:9 aspect ratio and 1280 x 720 pixels resolution. The fingerprint sensor is housed on the ride side combined with the power button.

Internal and Storage

The phone is powered by Snapdragon 630 SoC. The processor is paired with 4 GB RAM and 64 GB in-built memory that can be expanded via a memory card. It runs on Android 9.0 Pie with custom overlay.

The handset features USB type-C port, 3.5mm audio jack, and an NFC. One of the most interesting things about Xperia Ace is the fact that it is dust and waterproof. This gives it an edge over other compact phones.

Cameras

Xperia Ace does not pack anything interesting when it comes to cameras. The rear camera is a single sensor 12 MP snapper with a flashlight and the front camera is an 8 MP single sensor snapper. Nothing interesting going on here.

Battery and Pricing

Battery wise, the phone comes with a small 2700 mAh battery which is a little disappointing. It is priced at $444 and is up for reservation in Japan.
