Huawei’s New Patent Points Towards an Under-Display Selfie Camera

Punch-hole cameras have only started making their way into phones this year and it seems that their days are numbered already. Several companies including Vivo, Xiaomi, and Oppo are working on under-display cameras and it seems that Huawei is looking to hop onto the bandwagon as well.

Or at least, the company has patented an interface that uses such a camera, suggesting that it’s at least looking into the idea.

Spotted by WinFuture, the patent shows that Huawei is putting the camera lens at the top left corner of the screen. While the lens seems somewhat visible in some of the images, in one of them there’s a phone icon directly on top of it, showing that there’s usable screen above the lens.

The little interface will also show that you’re dialing still when you get out of the Caller app and will also show you the duration of your call too.

Take it With a Grain of Salt

Keep in mind that patents don’t always make it to final products and technologies. Just because Huawei has patented something that includes an under-display camera, doesn’t mean the company will actually release a phone with it.

Nevertheless, it’s pretty clear that most phone makers are slowly moving in on the idea. Xiaomi and Oppo have already teased handsets with under-display lenses, so it’s only a matter of time before bigger brands like Huawei do the same.
