Islamabad Safe City Project is Non-Operational Due to an Expired Contract

Islamabad Safe City Project, which incurred a cost of over Rs. 15 billion on the national exchequer, is in shambles. The project was started in November 2011 to ensure law and order in the capital city.

However, the crime rate has seen an alarming surge in the past few months. According to sources, authorities had partnered with a third party for smooth operations of the project, including software support.

The contract ended on May 28, 2019, becoming the last straw in the project’s demise.

Because of the expiry, the software is witnessing multiple issues. The recording facility has completely shut down with only 400 cameras working out of 1900. Allegedly, the contract for the project is now being given to a private firm while violating the rules and without raising tenders.

It needs to be mentioned here that the project started in late 2011 at a cost of Rs. 11 billion and was completed in May 2013.

In 2015, the Executive Committee of National Economic Council (ECNEC) reviewed the project cost and approved over Rs. 15 billion as the project’s total cost. The additional amount, Rs. 4 billion, was included under the heads of duties and taxes
