Sony Claims its USB Hub Has the World’s Fastest SD Card Reader

USB hubs are quite popular these days, especially with ultrabook/MacBook users. These laptops usually lack USB ports (the 2018 MacBook only had USB Type-C ports) and microSD card slots.

Sony is trying to capitalize on this trend with the “world’s fastest” UHS-II SD/microSD card reader and USB Hub with USB 3.1 Gen 2.

Sony’s MRW-S3 USB-hub is a one-stop solution for quickly transferring data, whether it’s high-resolution RAW photos or 4K videos. Through its USB 3.1 Gen 2 ports, it’s capable of reaching speeds of up to 1000MB/s.

On this hub, you’ll get USB-C and A ports for connecting devices new and old, not to mention an HDMI port for video output of up to 4K30fps There’s also a USB-C port for connecting the hub to a computer with an included USB-C to USB-C cable, which is a nice touch since most hubs only offer an integrated cable or connector.

The case is quite resilient, with IP68 dust and water resistance as well as an aluminum “wave” design that improves grip and reduces scratches. It weighs about 95g.

The hub receives up to 100W USB Power Delivery (USB PD)[2] to ensure stable and reliable connections with USB devices. Users are notified via the USB power level indicators  if each port is ready to be connected at max power levels.

Sony hasn’t announced the pricing for the MRW-S3 yet. It is set to go on sale sometime this fall alongside its new SF-M Tough SD cards.
