Sri Lanka’s Nuwan Kulasekara Retires from International Cricket

Nuwan Kulasekara has officially bid adieu to international cricket. He last donned his country’s national colors in 2017 during an ODI against Zimbabwe.

He was one of the few in the modern-day cricket with masterful skills of moving the ball both ways. With his 199 wickets in 184 appearances in Blue, Kulasekara was once considered the spearhead of Sri Lankan bowling attack.

The 37-year-old left the international arena as a third-highest wicket-taker among fast bowlers in ODIs for his country, only behind the likes of Chaminda Vaas and Lasith Malinga.

His record in the shortest format is equally impressive with 66 scalps in 58 matches. He exited the big stage as the joint second-highest wicket-taker reeling behind Malinga.

Making his debut in 2003 against England, Nuwan shot to fame very soon with his swing skills. He also developed the skill of reverse swing and became lethal in the death overs with his reverse-swinging yorkers.

He was Sri Lanka’s primary weapon in their T20 World Cup triumph in 2014. The confidence he gained from his spell of 2-2-0-1 in the group stages against the Netherlands helped him bowl ten dot balls in the death overs of the final game to restrict India to just 130. His team went on to win the World Cup.
