TikTok owner ByteDance, which is currently the world’s most successful startup, has confirmed that it has plans to launch a smartphone in partnership with Smartisan.
ByteDance said on Monday that it has plans to enter the smartphone market after it made a deal with Smartisan earlier this year, acquiring a number of its patents and employees.
It doesn’t come as a surprise that ByteDance is looking to step into the smartphone business, especially after it expanded into messaging and revealed plans to launch a music streaming service as well.
According to earlier reports, both of these new apps alongside TikTok will be included in ByteDance’s upcoming smartphone.
Been in Development for Some Time Now
A spokesperson from ByteDance confirmed in a statement that it had plans to produce a smartphone and that “the product was a continuation of earlier Smartisan plans, aiming to satisfy the needs of the old Smartisan user base.”
Chinese media reports that the smartphone has been in development for seven months. The project is being led by Wu Dezhou, who is a former executive of Smartisan.
Smartisan may not be as popular as other Chinese smartphone brands, but it does play a niche role in the competitive market. It is based in Beijing and was founded by Luo Yonghao.
ByteDance, on the other hand, quickly rose to fame following the release of its social media app TikTok, the app behind the company’s explosive growth. It now has over 300 million active users on a monthly basis in China only.
The upcoming ByteDance smartphone will most likely hit the Chinese market first, probably followed by an international release later on.
