Google Starts Rolling Out Android 10

Turns out, the rumors were correct and Google’s customer service leak was right after all. The long-awaited Android 10 has finally been rolled out to Pixel smartphones including:

  • Pixel, Pixel XL
  • Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL
  • Pixel 3, Pixel 3 XL
  • Pixel 3a, Pixel 3a XL

However, just like all other Google updates, it will be at least a few weeks before new firmware rolls out to other smartphones. If you can’t wait until your OEM launches Android 10, you can get the official Android 10 image from Google and install it manually.

Apart from ditching the traditional dessert names and sticking with numbers only, there are a few other interesting features that will be coming with the new operating system.

Dark Mode and Navigation System

Google has finally added dark mode to the upcoming OS. The feature was requested by a lot of users and it’s about time Google added it to Android.

Apart from this, we will see a new gesture-based navigation system. Same as desserts, Google has ditched the navigation bar, which gives you more screen space but at the same time makes the whole navigation system quite confusing.

You have to swipe left or right from the left or right edge of the screen to go back, swipe up from the bottom and hold to go into recent apps and swipe up from the bottom in an app to go back to the home screen.

Smart Reply and Live Captions

Smart replies have been a part of Android for a while but have been tweaked a little with Android 10. They now suggest actions along with replies, letting you open YouTube if you get a video link in the message or Google Maps if you get an address. This feature works for all major messaging apps.

Another very useful feature is live captions which, as the name suggests, will transcribe any and every audio/video on your smartphone. Even though it is supposed to be a part of Android 10, it will be rolled out in fall this year, initially for Pixel phones only.

Privacy

Google has also improved the overall privacy. Users can only share location data with applications that they actively use, also, you’ll be able to control web and app activity along with ad settings.

Other important security and privacy fixes will be rolled out via Google Play under Project Mainline, which was made an integral part of the new operating system. This way, important updates will reach the user faster as compared to individual OEMs issuing the update.

Apart from this, Android 10 will also let you silence notifications for an application that you find annoying. ‘Family link’ has also been added in the operating system.

As always, we’ll keep you posted about new developments in Android 10.
