Pakistan, Turkey & Malaysia to Start a TV Channel Against Islamophobia

Prime Minister Imran Khan has announced that Pakistan, Turkey, and Malaysia will jointly start an English language channel dedicated to confronting Islamophobia.

This was announced by Prime Minister Imran Khan in a tweet today.

The decision was announced after a trilateral meeting between Prime Minister Imran Khan, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Malaysian PM Mahathir Mohamad on the sidelines of the 74th UNGA session being held in New York.

Under the joint venture, series and films would be produced so that the Muslims and the world can be educated on Islamic history, he said. The channel aims to set the record straight about Islam.

PM Khan called for effective measures to counter hate speech and Islamophobia, stressing upon the importance of addressing both the causes and consequences of these phenomena

The Prime Minister further said that the channel will correct the misconceptions which bring people together against Muslims and would contextualize the issue of blasphemy.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in his remarks, said that Muslims are the most vulnerable community to hate speech across the world. Muslims are being lynched for eating beef in India, whereas, Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir has turned into an open prison, he said, warning that they fear bloodshed in the occupied valley.

President Erdogan termed hate speech as among the worst crimes against humanity.

Pakistan’s permanent representative to the UN Maleeha Lodhi also tweeted about the development, saying the states had agreed “to promote the narrative of Muslims to counter Islamophobia, cooperate in the area of film and also establish a joint TV channel”.

She further tweeted that the three countries should pool their talents and knowledge together to build IPs together.
