Oppo A9 2020: Mid-range Specs and Long Battery Life [Unboxing]

Oppo’s A-series has been traditionally focused on the mid-range price bracket (around Rs. 30,000 or less). This time, however, Oppo is switching it up with beefier specifications and a higher price tag.

The new A9 2020 brings robust specifications in an upper mid-range price bracket. It is available for pre-order for Rs. 46,000.

Some of its major highlights include the Snapdragon 665, which offers high-end performance and a gigantic 5000 mAh battery equipped with reverse charging. It’s not a unique feature by any means, but it’s rare in this price range.

ProPakistani received a review unit of the phone from Oppo. Here’s what we think about the phone:

What’s in The Box?

The box is pretty standard and comes with the usual accessories.

Inside, there’s paperwork, a sim ejection tool and a TPU case which is slightly better than the usual gel cases due to its frosted sides.

Further in, you get wired earbuds and a USB Type-C charger. Sadly, the phone does not have support for any fast charging, so the 10W charger included in the box is going to take around 3 to 4 hours to charge the large 5000 mAh battery.

Design and Build

Oppo is advertising this color as Space Purple. There is a slight transition between black and purple from different viewing angles and a bit of shimmer as well. The power and volume buttons are on opposite sides, which should make it easier to take screenshots. Furthermore, there is a dual SIM slot, a USB Type C port, 3.5mm audio jack and dual speaker setup.

Moving over to the front of the phone, you’re greeted by a massive 6.5-inch IPS display. Unfortunately, the 720p resolution is below par for such a large display and text/icons may appear pixelated.

The quad-camera setup at the back includes a 48MP main sensor, an 8MP ultra-wide sensor, a standard 2MP sensor, and finally, a 2MP depth sensor lens is located in a separate cutout under the LED flash. The fingerprint sensor underneath is fast and reliable. You can also unlock the device through Face Unlock, which is equally fast.

User Interface

The phone runs on Color OS 6 based on Android 9 Pie. If you’ve used an Oppo phone before, you’ll be familiar with the heavily skinned UI, with an iPhone-like experience. You get all your apps on the home screen since there is no app drawer and the quick settings panel under the notification bar features huge buttons.

App launch speeds are blazing fast thanks to UFS storage, which is another major highlight of the phone as most mid-range phones have slower EMMC storage.

Overall, it is a solid smartphone that should fit the needs of most users. There is 8GB RAM, UFS 2.1 Storage, an excellent camera with ultra-wide-angle lens and optical image stabilization – features which are hard to find in a non-flagship device. All of this makes for a compelling package.

Oppo A9 2020 is currently going for Rs 46,000 for pre-ordering. It should become widely available for local purchases soon.
