Pak Army Rescues Two British Mountaineers, Three Still Stranded

Pakistan Army has rescued two British climbers who had fallen from Koee Broghail Glacier in Chitral. The mountaineers were trapped on the peak after sliding from a height of fourteen thousand feet.

The Additional District Commissioner for Upper Chitral Irfanuddin told media that the rescued backpackers were identified as John James and William Tayler and had been shifted to Mastuj in an army helicopter.

ADC Chitral said that three trekkers, including a guide, were still missing. The stranded hikers are Alastair James Swinton, Thomas Michael Livingstone, Uisdean Robertson Hawthorn and the local tour guide Imran.

Irfanuddin said that the British climbers had arrived at Koyo Zom base camp on September 3.

They were scaling Koyo Zom – the highest peak of Hindu Raj mountain – on Sunday when they suffered an accident, he added. The mountain is nearly 7000 meters high and sits between the Hindukush and Karakorum ranges in the east.

“We started a rescue operation after hearing about the accident. The rescue team reached them via helicopter,” the ADC said, adding that they were injured but stable.

Irfanuddin mentioned that one of the stranded hikers had received a head injury.

“We’re trying to trace them,” Irfanuddin said, referring to the stranded trekkers.
