Sony is Developing a 3D Holographic Display for Gaming

Sony Interactive Entertainment applied for a patent back in 2017 for something called a “holographic display screen”. The patent has finally been granted and it describes a technical display that can project holographic content for video games.

What makes this display stand out is that it doesn’t require 3D glasses, unlike most 3D solutions that are currently available. 3D glasses tend to restrict movement and can also become uncomfortable after prolonged use. This 3D holographic display will overcome both of these limitations.

How it Works

The display uses a light emitter and numerous micromirrors to reflect the light in different angles. Once the light source is modulated electronically, it creates different images for both the left and right eye to achieve a 3D effect.

It is equipped with several light sensors and cameras for eye-tracking and facial recognition. This helps determine the number of users looking at it as well as the distance between the viewers and the screen. It can also recognize gestures such as nodding, blinking or winking.

These sensors can be placed anywhere on the display, under the side bezels or even under the screen itself. This would help achieve a completely bezel-less screen for an immersive gaming experience.

The display can be used as a conventional 2D screen as well and Sony is even looking at possibilities where one user will see 3D content while another watches it in 2D.

Compatible With PlayStation

The best part is that this holographic display will be fully compatible with a Sony PlayStation. This will open a new world of possibilities for the future generations of PlayStation consoles for both gamers and developers.

We could see holographic games that use gestures on future PlayStation consoles.

Only time will tell whether Sony intends to market these holographic displays for their gaming consoles. Such a product will also likely cost a lot if it does become a reality.
