Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has lost millions of rupees due to negligence and mismanagement during the previous government’s tenure.
A recent report has highlighted two separate incidents where the national airline added an extra burden of more than Rs. 175 million on taxpayers – all thanks to sheer imprudence.
As per details, PIA made a payment of $67,000, meant for overflying charges to Turkmenistan, to a conman. In 2018, the airline received an email from its official account informing them about the change of email address. A few days later, they received an invoice (from the new email address) demanding charges for 70 PIA flights that used the airspace of Turkmenistan. The scoundrel also sent them bank details to receive the payment.
PIA officials, dumb enough to be duped, confirmed bank account details from the new email address and transferred the amount. The story came to light only when the airline received an official invoice from Turkmen authorities.
In another development, the national flag carrier wasted food worth more than Rs. 107 million between 2013 and 2018.
An audit of the Flight Kitchen has revealed that the total meal amounting to more than 72 million was wasted during the said period. Similarly, Rs. 35 million worth of food was wasted on Lahore airport due to poor planning and negligence.
An inquiry report which indicated the responsible officials and recommended strict action against them was also brushed under the carpet.
