In an unfortunate turn of events, a postal team constituting a postmaster his postman came under a gun attack in Swabi.
The incident occurred on Monday in which the postman, identified as, Malang Jan, got martyred while the postmaster Sher Bacha got critically wounded and is currently being treated at a local hospital.
The officials of Pakistan Post were on duty to distribute pensions payments in the area of Ismaila, Swabi, when unknown gunmen opened fire on them and looted the cash.
According to the available details, the postal team was specially constituted for delivering advance pension payments to the pensioner’s home, as announced by the government of Pakistan.
Though delivering pensions at doorsteps ahead of the due date is a commendable effort of the government; however, sending a postal team with cash (usually in millions of rupees) and no security is endangering their lives.
As the government is providing them with necessary personal protection gear to deal with the ongoing coronavirus threat, it should also provide security to these people who are risking their lives during Coronavirus pandemic to help the masses in the time of need.
It is worth mentioning here that Pakistan Post had started delivering pensions to ex-employees across the country on the directives of the Minister for Communications and Postal Services, Murad Saeed.
The move was aimed to minimize unnecessary public gatherings around the country amid the global coronavirus pandemic.
Under this initiative, the national postal service is providing pensions to 1.3 million former employees at their homes as the country continues to grapple with Coronavirus.
Not to mention, it’s high time for Pakistan Post to shift to digital channels amid the growing era of digital world.
The migration to electronic payments will stimulate ease for the Pakistan Post and will further prevent incidents like this to happen in the future.
It should possibly create a shared platform for all disbursements and collections which will help the department and the users alike.
