Philips’ Personal Health Leader Talks About How The Company Is Working On Innovations For Healthier Air

By Nicholas Lee, Personal Health Leader, Philips ASEAN Pacific

People across the world are looking for new ways to take greater control of their personal health and wellbeing, and the quality of the air we breathe plays an essential part in this. Most often, controlling air quality is focused on outdoor air as opposed to indoor environments such as homes and businesses. In fact, both need to be addressed.

The current COVID-19 pandemic has heightened the awareness of clean air like never before. In a new normal world where we are spending more time indoors, a healthy indoor environment is important for us to stay healthy and live well.

Philips air purifiers can help to improve indoor environments and reduce exposure to the irritants, Nicholas Lee

Philips has a long-standing heritage in health technology and is also recognized as a global leader in air purification. Philips has been partnering with expert technologists in its innovation labs across the globe to deliver integrated solutions for healthy air. In this exclusive piece, Nicholas Lee, Personal Health Leader, Philips ASEAN Pacific, talks about how the company is working on innovations for healthier air with the launch of its latest Philips Air Purifier 2000i Series.

  1. Why should people be concerned about their indoor air quality?

We spend a large proportion of our time indoors every day, more so during these challenging times as a result of the pandemic. Studies show that the air we breathe indoors can be up to 2 to 5 times more polluted than outdoor air.

When it comes to improving air quality indoors, it is critical to remove the ultrafine airborne particles using an Air Purifier. Otherwise, these microscopic pollutants in the air can slip past our body’s defenses, enter the lungs, and become readily picked up by cells and carried through the bloodstream. This results in widespread exposure of air pollution to virtually all cells in the body, penetrating deep into our respiratory and circulatory systems.

  1. What can be done about allergens at home?

During days of high pollen count outside, entry of pollen can be reduced by keeping windows and doors closed. Air Purifiers equipped with High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters are also effective at removing allergens, including pollen, from the air as they pass through the filter. Pollen is typically the size of 10 – 100μm and it’s reassuring to know that the NanoProtect Series (HEPA + Active Carbon) filter removes ultrafine particles as small as 0.003μm in size. To help combat poor air quality indoors, Philips offers a range of state-of-the-art air purifiers, which reduce dust and allergens.

  1. How do Philips Air Purifiers work?

Philips NanoProtect HEPA filters are the preferred choice in the current context, where the speed and extent of aerosol removal are crucial – and that is a function of the volume of air passing through the filter and the aforementioned filtration efficiency. When using Philips NanoProtect HEPA filters, the end-user can be reassured that the cleaning speed and efficiency of the air purifier, measured by CADR, will be maximized due to the low airflow resistance of the filter.

Philips NanoProtect HEPA filters have been tested against particles that are smaller than those used in the above standards. We have tested against 0.003 microns all our air purifiers, with filtration efficiency up to 99.97%[5].

  1. What is a HEPA filter?

HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) filters are composed of a mat or randomly arranged fibers. HEPA filters have similar performance to those used to keep the air clean in hospital operating rooms and industrial clean rooms. These filters are very effective at trapping microscopic particles as small as bacteria and viruses. HEPA filters are effective at capturing greater than 99 percent of the airborne microbes in the filtered air[6].

  1. Which type of allergy triggers can Philips solutions help with?

Philips solutions can help to improve indoor air quality by reducing triggers, such as unseen airborne particles, outdoor pollutants, pollen, pet dander, and tackling hidden dirt and dust, helping to ensure that you and your family can breathe easier, always.

  1. What are the benefits of Philips’ respiratory products?

Philips air purifiers can help to improve indoor environments and reduce exposure to the irritants and allergens that may trigger symptoms. Consumers can also find peace of mind in knowing that the air they are breathing at home is cleaner.

  1. What is AeraSense and how does it work?

Developed by Philips, AeraSense is an advanced, professional-grade gas and particle sensor that accurately identifies airborne pollutants even smaller than PM2.5. These fine dust particles are so small that individually they can only be detected with an electron microscope and can penetrate and settle in the deepest areas of the lungs, causing health problems.

AeraSense then intelligently processes this information, automatically adjusting the fan speed to ensure that the device’s purification settings are at the ideal level for the current air conditions. Additionally, using the levels of PM2.5 particles as an indicator, it gives you real-time, numerical feedback coupled with a simple color-coding system on your indoor air quality for continuous monitoring.

  1. What Philips Air Purifiers are available in Pakistan?

To be launched in December 2020, Philips’ latest air purifier innovation – the Philips Air Purifier 2000i Series – presents an effective and innovative solution for healthy, clean, pollutant-free air in real-time and a more powerful, hygienic, and complete clean to increase ventilation and particle filtration. Currently available to consumers in Pakistan are the Philips Air Purifier 800 Series, 1000 Series, and 2000 Series.

  1. What is your goal for Philips in Pakistan?

To help people stay healthy and enjoy the best possible quality of life, Philips envisions a new health paradigm – one that values health promotion and prevention just as much as treatment, recognizing the needs and expectations of the modern health consumer.

We work with a network of health experts and healthcare specialists, such as nutritionists, dental professionals, and sleep experts; using their insights to help us shape our innovations and offer consumers easy access to professional expertise. We are also exploring partnerships with the government, healthcare providers, and associations to drive education on the importance of health and personal care, whilst continuing to raise awareness of various health issues through global observances that we support such as World Heart Day, World Sleep Day, World Oral Health Day, World Allergy Week, World Asthma Day and others.

We want to empower the consumers in Pakistan to make healthcare an individual responsibility and will continue to align our efforts to complement the government’s focus on empowering people to take care of their personal health. With our deep expertise and clinical know-how in professional healthcare, we aspire to create new healthcare solutions that allow people to sleep, eat, look, feel, and care better.
