Prime Minister Imran Khan has approved funds for the Ministry of National Health Services (NHS) to purchase COVID-19 vaccines in advance, SAPM on Health, Dr. Faisal Sultan, has confirmed.
While speaking in a talk show at a local news channel, Dr. Faisal said that the premier is keen on ensuring the widespread availability of effective Coronavirus vaccines as soon as possible.
Although Dr. Faisal didn’t disclose the exact amount of funds approved by the PM, the MNHS, earlier this month, had written a letter to the premier, seeking $100 million from the government to acquire potential Coronavirus vaccines that are at the final stage of clinical trials.
Dr. Faisal added that the federal government has also devised a comprehensive COVID-19 vaccine strategy in line with global standards.
Under this strategy, vulnerable groups such as the elderly and frontline healthcare workers will be the first recipients of the potential Coronavirus vaccine.
Besides, an expert committee of MNHS, tasked with providing technical assistance, is continuously monitoring the safety and efficacy data emanating from all last stage vaccines trials.
