It is no secret that ads on the internet are not only bothersome but often intrusive and resource-intensive as well. These ads are commonly responsible for ruining a web browsing experience especially on websites that don’t allow ad blockers.
This is why Google announced a new feature back in September that would block ads on Chrome if they are using too many system resources. This feature has now been spotted by more people online, indicating that an official release is close.
The new Google Chrome feature automatically blocks advertisements on a website if they use too many resources or meet any of the following criteria:
- Uses the main thread for more than 60 seconds in total
- Uses the main thread for more than 15 seconds in any 30-second window
- Uses more than 4 megabytes of network bandwidth
Once an ad reaches its limits or meets any of the above criteria, it automatically blocks the ad with an error page in the ad frame saying “ad used too many resources for your device, so we removed it”. This not only saves bandwidth but processing power and RAM as well.

As mentioned before, more people have started seeing this feature at work on Chrome 87 on desktop as well as Android. This means that an official release should be right around the corner.
We will update this space as soon as there is an official announcement.
