473 Employees Bid Farewell to PIA Under VSS

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) had introduced a Voluntary Separation Scheme (VSS) and 473 employees have benefitted from the scheme as of 15 December. The scheme is part of the airline’s restructuring plan to bring its workforce to international standards.

PIA had introduced the VSS for its employees on 7 August, for which the federal government had provided funds worth more than Rs. 12 billion.

Under the scheme, 3,500 employees had been given the opportunity to leave the airline with a respectable sum despite the difficulties that the airline has been undergoing due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The laying off of these employees would potentially result in annual savings worth Rs. 4.2 billion for PIA.

The airline plans to divide its department into core and non-core activities. The core activities will include finance, CNC, security, and the human resources departments, and the non-core activities include engineering and the kitchen.

Following this, PIA will first reduce its 12,900 employees to 7,500 and will reduce them again to either 6,000 or 5,600 by 2021.

The airline’s administration has also completed all its disciplinary cases expeditiously and has made preparations for the forced retirements of its employees on the basis of their performance.
