Qualcomm Announces Snapdragon 480 5G With 2X Higher Performance Than Snapdragon 460

In 2020, Qualcomm promised to deliver 5G for cheap through affordable chipsets that are easily available on budget handsets. The American chipmaker is delivering on that promise now as it has released its first 400 series 5G SoC, which is the cheapest one so far.

The Snapdragon 480 5G is based on an 8nm process and has the Snapdragon X51 5G Modem integrated into it with support for both mmWave and Sub-6 GHz networks.

As for the CPU configuration, there are 2.0GHz Cortex A76 performance cores alongside 1.8GHz Cortex A55 efficiency cores with an Adreno 619 GPU. Compared to the Snapdragon 460, the 480 5G boasts a two-fold increase in GPU and CPU performance and a 70% improvement in AI tasks. The AI tasks are processed faster thanks to Qualcomm’s Hexagon 686 chipset.

It supports up to 120Hz refresh rate displays with FHD+ resolution, 64MP cameras with 1080p 60FPS recording, and up to a total of three camera sensors. There is also Quick Charge 4+ as well as Bluetooth 5.1 and WiFi 6 for faster connections. Here is the full spec sheet.

The Snapdragon 480 5G is expected to debut first on budget smartphones from a range of phone makers including Vivo, Oppo, Xiaomi, Motorola, and Nokia. Qualcomm says that we should expect the first few devices powered by the SD480 5G in January.
