According to details, the wildlife department has fixed the fee for a single permit for the trophy hunting of the Punjab urial at $1.8 million.

Community-Based Organizations (CBOs), which are responsible for breeding and conservation of the rare local animal species, receive 80% of the total earnings of each year’s trophy hunting campaign.

While local hunters are barred under law from applying for the permits of trophy hunting, the wildlife department has not received any applications from international hunters for this year’s Urial trophy hunting campaign.

Since poaching is banned to protect and conserve wildlife around the world, trophy hunting is held to hunt animals from rare species that have neared the end of their life.

Trophy hunting is also organized in Pakistan to hunt several animals including the Himalayan Ibex, Markhor, Punjab Urial, and a few other animals.

According to Honorary Game Warden at the wildlife department, Badar Munir, trophy hunting is one of the best means of legal hunting, which is a common practice all over the world.

He said that it is a misconception that trophy hunting is destroying the rare breed of animals in Pakistan.

Contrary to the prevalent misconception, the population of Punjab Urials has increased from 500 to 4,000 in a few years while the number of Markhors has gone up from 2,000 to 4,000 during the past two decades, the official added.

  • Increase permit fee to 10 million usd and allow locals. Then all 16 permits will be “applied for”.
