24 Passengers Who Landed in Lahore Affected by New Strain of COVID-19

The new strain of coronavirus, which is running rampant in the United Kingdom (UK) for the past month, has also reached Pakistan.

Health officials at Lahore’s Allama Iqbal International Airport have revealed that at least 24 passengers, who recently arrived in Lahore, have tested positive for the new variant of the COVID-19, which according to the researchers, is 70 percent more lethal and spreads more rapidly than its original version.

The passengers were quickly isolated and are currently under treatment, an official said, adding that strict scrutiny is being carried out at all national airports to curb the spread of the new variant.

Pakistan is already in the grip of the second wave of coronavirus, which has affected 535,914 people in the country so far. According to the National Command and Operation Center (NCOC) data, 1,873 people tested positive, while 58 people lost their lives due to the complexions from COVID-19 in the last 24 hours.

Smart lockdowns were imposed across the country, and the educational institutions were closed to curb the spread of the pandemic in the country.

Meanwhile, the government has expedited its efforts to acquire the COVID vaccine and has approved the emergency use of Chinese, Russian, and UK made vaccines in the country. On the other hand, China has approved a grant of 0.5 million doses of Sinopharm vaccine to Pakistan by the end of this month.
