Fujifilm has launched its fourth large-format mirrorless camera in Fujifilm’s GFX System dubbed the GFX100S. The new camera is basically a toned-down variant of the Fujifilm GFX100 launched in 2019 and is designed to allow photographers and filmmakers to take large-format pictures with added portability. According to Victor Ha, senior director of marketing and product development for FUJIFILM North America Corporation, the camera is one of the most compact, high-performance, large-format mirrorless cameras in the world.

Design and construction

Despite flaunting one of the largest imaging sensors on a camera (102 MP), the Fujifilm GFX100S is only slightly larger than traditional full-frame DSLR and mirrorless cameras. This makes it easy to work with and carry around. It is built using a magnesium alloy body with a dense casing around the lens mount to make it dust and moisture resistant. The device is capable of working in temperatures as low as -10 degrees centigrade.

It comes with a 3.68 million dot OLED fixed viewfinder and a 3.2-inch, 2.36 million dot tilting touchscreen LCD. There is also a 1.8-inch LCD on the top to show current settings.

Internals

Fujifilm GFX100S is powered by the company’s high-performance quad-core X-Processor 4 CPU. For imaging, it utilizes the 102MP, back-illuminated large format CMOS sensor from the GFX100.  Compared to smaller, lower-resolution sensors commonly found in traditional full-frame DSLR, the GFX100S’ imaging sensor is approximately 1.7 times larger which enhances its sensitivity to light. It can capture 4K 30p video at 400Mbps 10-bit 4:2:0 F-Log internally or 10-bit 4:2:2 F-Log or 12-bit RAW externally through the HDMI.

The camera is also equipped with 19 exclusive Film Simulation modes including the Nostalgic Neg that emerged in the 1970s. It has one of the best autofocus systems with the on-sensor phase-detection pixels cover almost 100% of the imaging sensor. The camera can acquire focus in as little as 0.16 seconds even in low light.

Apart from this, the Fujifilm GFX100S has 5-axis In-Body Stabilization (IBIS) delivering up to 6-stops of Vibration Reduction and intuitive controls for familiar experiences.

Pricing and Availability

The GFX100S is expected to be available for sale in March 2021 at a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $5,999.95.
