The device is smartly designed to mimic the biological characteristics and movements of a normal heart. Weighing 900g and powered by batteries, the artificial heart perfectly mirrors a mechanical pump for blood circulation.

Carmat’s CEO Stéphane Piat discussed with Reuters his organization’s motives behind designing such a device, saying:

The idea behind this heart, which was born nearly 30 years ago, was to create a device that would replace heart transplants, a device that works physiologically like a human heart, one that’s pulsating, self-regulated, and compatible with blood.

According to a recent report published in France, the device is designed to replace a real heart for years in patients suffering from end-stage biventricular heart failure.

For now, it has only been approved as a temporary implant for patients awaiting a heart transplant.
