Google is Now Getting a Dark Mode for Desktop Search

According to the latest report by 9to5Google, Google is once again testing dark mode for its search page. The feature has not been rolled out widely but recently, an A/B test was discovered unveiling that Google Search dark mode will also follow the system theme on the user’s desktop.

As an incognito window on Chrome is launched, a pop-up will appear on the search page saying dark theme is now available”. The pop-up further explains how easy it is to turn the setting on with a shortcut button. It looks like the similar dark mode icon that we saw on the dark mode briefly rolled out by Google last month.

In the search settings, users can set the dark mode to match their system’s settings. This feature was not expected since other Google products that have a dark mode require manual activation. Based on this A/B test, it looks like Google Search will just match the theme of the user’s device as a whole.

This function will work well for Windows 10 and macOS users, who both have system-wide themes that Chrome, Safari, Edge, and other browsers support.

As far as the theme is concerned, Google has opted for a dark gray background rather than true black, using white elements to contrast with the background while the icons and links remain light blue.

However, the dark mode does not work on all pages and also does not persist in closing a reopening incognito. This might be fixed in the final version.
