Elon Musk’s xAI has brought Grok into Microsoft Office apps through new Microsoft 365 add-ins for free.
The Grok add-ins are available for Word, Excel and PowerPoint, giving users an AI assistant directly inside their documents, spreadsheets and presentations.
xAI describes the Word and PowerPoint tools as free Microsoft 365 add-ins, while Microsoft Marketplace also lists Grok as an agent that works across Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
What Grok Does in Word
In Microsoft Word, Grok can help users turn notes into structured documents.
xAI says the Word add-in can draft proposals, reference materials and guides. It can also rewrite text, fix grammar, improve clarity and align writing style across multiple authors. The tool can also bring web research into a document and connect with sources such as email, SharePoint and Google Drive.
What Grok Does in Excel and PowerPoint
In Excel, Grok lets users ask questions in plain English, write formulas and run scenarios inside the workbook.
This means users can interact with spreadsheet data without manually building every formula or analysis step. xAI says the Excel add-in is designed to work from a side panel inside the open workbook.
In PowerPoint, Grok can help users create and edit presentations. Microsoft Marketplace says the add-in can build presentations, write financial models in Excel and draft professional documents in Word through a conversation-based sidebar.
A Direct Challenge to Microsoft Copilot
The rollout puts xAI closer to Microsoft’s core productivity market.
Microsoft 365 Copilot already works across apps such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams. Microsoft’s current pricing page lists several Copilot business plans and add-ons, including Microsoft 365 Copilot Business and bundled Microsoft 365 plans with Copilot.
Microsoft originally announced Microsoft 365 Copilot for commercial customers at $30 per user per month, making Grok’s free-to-install Office add-ins a clear pricing challenge for users comparing AI productivity tools.
Pricing Pressure
The biggest issue is not only features. It is pricing.
AI tools are becoming a standard part of office software, but companies are still deciding how much they are willing to pay per employee. A free Grok add-in could push some users to test xAI’s tool before paying for Microsoft’s deeper Copilot integration.
However, businesses will still need to compare limits, data access, security controls, admin features, and enterprise support before switching workflows.
xAI Wants Distribution
The Office add-ins give xAI a direct route into daily work tools.
Instead of asking users to leave Word, Excel or PowerPoint, Grok now appears inside the same apps where many office workers already spend their time. That could help xAI grow usage quickly, especially among users who want AI help but do not want to pay extra for a separate enterprise Copilot license.
For now, Grok’s Office add-ins look like a serious distribution move. Microsoft still has the advantage of deeper native integration, but xAI is now competing inside the same workspace and using price as its biggest weapon.
