Primary cameras on smartphones have been getting higher resolution sensors to a point where we now have a variety of 50MP+ camera phones available in the market for a couple of years. Selfie cameras, on the other hand, have mostly been stuck around 32MP – 44MP resolution, but that may change this year.
According to notable tipster Digital Chat Station, a phone with a 108MP selfie camera is releasing this year. The Weibo post does not reveal much else, but the phone is likely going to be Chinese.

It is certainly exciting to hear about a 100MP selfie camera, but it’s unclear how this technology is going to be implemented.
All 108MP cameras currently available on the market are massive and take up a lot of space on the back of the phone. This would mean that a 100MP selfie camera will likely make for a horrendous notch or a huge top bezel.

However, it would be easy to implement on a pop-up selfie camera similar to the OnePlus 7 Pro, or a motorized flip camera seen on the Zenfone 6 and 7 by Asus. It could also be a concept phone with a completely unique design.
If the design turns out to be practical, we may also see other OEMs jump on the bandwagon soon after the phone is released. We will update this space as soon as more information is available.
