Planning Ministry Involves Researchers, Demographers, and Experts for Next Population Census

The Ministry of Planning Development & Special Initiatives has included prominent demographers, researchers and experts in the committee constituted by the government to make recommendations based on international best practices for the next Population Census.

The committee will be headed by the Deputy Chairman Planning Commission, Dr. Mohammad Jehanzeb Khan.

Meanwhile, the results of the National Census 2017 have not been published and are yet to be approved by the Council of Common Interests (CCI).

The Federal Cabinet constituted a Committee to look into the issues and complaints which had caused a delay in the approval and issuance of the census results.

After detailed deliberations, the Cabinet Committee recommended that the results of the census conducted in 2017 be approved for publishing, while the process of and methodology for collecting data may be reviewed simultaneously to ensure that they are in accordance with the international best practices in the future.

The committee also recommended that the next census be conducted early without waiting for the ten-year gap.

The federal Cabinet has endorsed the recommendations of the committee. These recommendations will be presented to the Council of Common Interests (CCI) for final approval.

Meanwhile, the government has constituted a committee to deliberate the census process, data collection, and the field operation methodologies used around the world for census taking.

The committee’s recommendations are expected to bring major improvements in the process and methodology of data collection for the census that will address the complaints and concerns from various quarters regarding the results of the national census.

Apart from the official representatives, the committee also draws upon independent experts including Dr. G.M. Arif who is the former Joint Director of PIDE, Country Director Population Council Dr. Zeba. A. Sathar, renowned demographer and the former Chairperson of the Punjab Higher Education Commission Prof. Dr. Muhammad Nizamuddin, retired Professor of the University of Balochistan Dr. Syed Mohammad Arif, demographer Dr. Durre-e-Nayab, Joint Director/Director Research PIDE Dr. Ayesha Sheraz, Demographer/Senior Fellow, NIPS, Mazhar Jamal, Ex Joint Census Commissioner, Geography/GIS specialist, and demographer Dr. Sanam Wagma Khattak from the University of Peshawar.
