Karachi University Removes Department Chairperson Over Harassment Charges

The University of Karachi has appointed Prof. Dr. Farah Iqbal as Chairperson Criminology Department, after the former chairperson,  Dr. Ghulam Muhammad Burfat was dismissed on the grounds of a sexual harassment complaint that was filed by a female member of faculty.

Vice-Chancellor, Khalid M. Iraqi, has ordered the incumbent to handover the charge to Farah Iqbal, who also heads the Department of Psychology.

The order was issued by Registrar, Dr. Abdul Waheed, on the recommendation of the anti-sexual harassment committee comprising Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences Dean, Dr. Nasreen, Teachers Society President, Dr. Shah Ali Ul Qader, and Deputy Registrar, Zia Sheikh.

Discussing the issue with media reps, the anti-harassment committee lead by Dr. Nasreen Aslam Iqbal stated that Dr. Burfat was removed from his position due to recurring complaints of misconduct filed against him by students and faculty members.

She added that Dr. Burfat will continue to work at the department as a teacher, but refused to comment on what punishment the committee had proposed for him.

Dr. Burfat earlier claimed that “if I had ever been involved in harassing female teachers or students, I would have been fired from my job by now”.

The accused has his reservations about KU’s “unbiased policies” of late and intends to “use each and every legal platform against the harassment committee’s decision”.
