Planning Minister Orders Quick Provision of 3G, 4G in GB

The Federal Minister for Planning, Development & Special Initiatives, Asad Umar, has directed the Ministry of Information Technology & Telecom and the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to finalize the auction of 3G and 4G licenses in Gilgit-Baltistan on a priority basis.

He said that IT is more important for the remote areas than it is for the large cities of Pakistan, adding that generating economic activities in the remote areas will only be possible through strong IT infrastructure in the future.

Minister Umar made these remarks while chairing a progress review meeting on the Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) Development Plan here on Monday. Additional the Chief Secretary of GB briefed the minister about the GB potential projects in the public sector, the non-PSDP initiatives, and the Public-Private Partnership model.

Various priority sectors like clean energy/hydropower, health, education and skill development, tourism, private sector development, agriculture, women’s development, social welfare, and youth were discussed.

The attendees were informed that all the provincial departments are in contact with concerned federal ministries/divisions and PC-Is of the shortlisted schemes are being prepared by the concerned departments.

The Government of GB has placed special emphasis on clean energy to mitigate a severe power crisis in the area, and its other priority sectors include tourism, gems and minerals, agricultural products, roads and communications, and information technology.

The Chief Minister of GB Khalid Khurshid, the Secretary Ministry of KA & GB, the Secretary Planning, the Secretary Water & Power, the Chairman NHA, the CEO PPP Authority, the Additional Chief Secretary GB, the Additional Secretary Planning, and other senior officers from the ministries and division also attended the meeting.
