Asus Launches ROG 5 Gaming Phone With 18GB RAM, 6,000 mAh Battery And 144Hz Display

The long-awaited Asus ROG Phone 5 has finally become official after a long streak of teasers and leaks. This time around, the base ROG Phone 5 comes alongside a ROG Phone 5 Ultimate with extra RAM and color options and a secondary display on the back.

Let’s look into the details.

Design and Display

The display size has been increased to 6.78-inches on an AMOLED panel with 1080p resolution and a 144Hz adaptive refresh rate. The fingerprint sensor is present underneath the display and features fast unlocks.

The secondary display on the rear panel of ROG Phone 5 Ultimate Edition can be used to display notifications, date and time, and more. This is exclusive to the Ultimate variant which also brings a matte white color option with blue accents.

The base model only has dot LEDs on the back (as shown in the first image) which light up to show different patterns.

Internals and Storage

The main chipset at work here is the 5nm Snapdragon 888 and RAM options start with as little as 8GB, but go up all the way to a whopping 18GB. Storage goes up to 512GB UFS 3.1, which allows for snappy performance alongside the speedy CPU. The 18GB/512GB memory option is limited to the Ultimate version.

On the software front, you get Android 11 on top of ROG UI out of the box.

Cameras

The main camera around the back is a 64MP module paired with a 13MP ultrawide unit as well as a 5MP macro lens. As always, the camera is not the main focus of gaming phones, so we don’t expect to see anything remarkable in this department.

The front-facing camera is a 24MP shooter.

Battery and Pricing

The battery capacity is 6,000 mAh just as before, but now you get super-fast charging thanks to 65W wired charging. As always, there is not one, but two USB C ports on the phone, with the second port located on the side to allow you to play games while charging the phone at the same time.

The Asus ROG Phone 5 will go for a starting price of $950, whereas the Ultimate edition will be available for an eye-watering $1420.

Accessories

As always, you also get your usual bundle of gaming accessories with the phone including the AeroActive Cooler 5 whose sole purpose is to keep thermals in check during gaming. This fan packs a USB C passthrough charging, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and two remappable trigger buttons. You also get the Aero Case but all of this is limited to the Ultimate variant.

The cooler attaches to the phone through a proprietary connector using pogo pins, unlike last time when the accessories had to be connected through a third USB-C port.
